HI-MECH-high-tech district of Networked Laboratories for Advanced Mechanics in Emilia-Romagna

Mission

The Hi-mech District is intended to be an international research and innovation pole of excellence, specialised in the hi-tech mechanics, designed to attract economic and scientific resources to increase competitiveness, development, technical, industrial and economic skills within the regional territory.
The creation of the Hi-mech District is a strategy developed by the Emilia-Romagna Region to strengthen the dynamics of the Regional manufacturing system concerning applied research, precompetitive development and innovation activities aimed at the enhancement of the technological content of manufacturing and at the development of the knowledge economy.

Description

The district architecture envisages the setting up of a network of laboratories working in three technological areas:

1) Design technologies
2) Materials and surfaces
3) Mechatronics and automation

And in specific research areas, such as:
  Simulation and integrated design
  Noise and vibrations
Sensors, actuators and automation systems for mechanical industry

  • Mechatronics for mechanical industry
  • Controlled atmosphere technologies, products and processes
  • Surfaces and Coatings for Advanced Mechanics and Nanomechanics
  • Nano-manufacturing
  • Materials and processes for mechanical design

Hi-Mech operating tools will be the so-called net-lab, i.e. Networked Laboratories that collect and share the best skills in the research areas and that contribute to the development of a critical mass around these areas, to achieve a degree of excellence in industrial research and to effectively transfer technology.

Target And Perspective
in the Mid-Long Term

  • Take advantage from the highly valuable scientific structures and skills to foster an additional network excellence
  • Develop a critical mass in the mechanical research field; 700 persons already involved, 200 of which are newly hired
  • Promote exchanges between researchers working for different bodies involved and between the research and the business world
  • Train talents and attract new high-profile human resources coming from Italy and abroad
  • Share existing laboratories and facilities and create new ones
  • Provide mechanisms supporting Hi-tech Spin-off creation.
