Technological district on Polymeric and Composite Materials

Mission

		IMAST has as its task the establishment of a research, training and technology innovation system where the objectives of knowledge development and know-how growth are integrated. These objectives have to be applied to industrial products and processes in the following sectors:   aerospace   car   shipbuilding   biomedical   electronics   public facilities

Description

		The technological district initiatives are managed and coordinate by a District organization, IMAST, established as a Consortium Company in which a system of cooperation among companies, the public system of research and the business world is involved. The legal headquarter seats in Naples, via Don Bosco 8/E and the operating site, with laboratories and offices, is located in Portici, P.le E. Fermi 1. The partners of IMAST are: Regione Campania, University of Naples “Federico II”, Italian National Research Council, ENEA, Italian Research Aerospace Centre (CIRA) S.C.p.A, Alenia Aeronautica S.p.A, Esaote SpA, (Bracco group), Consorzio T.R.E., Elasis S.C.p.A. (FIAT group), Cetena S.p.A. (Fincantieri group), STMicroelectronics s.r.l., Pirelli Labs Spa, Mapei SpA, Meliorbanca S.P.A., Sanpaolo Banco Di Napoli Spa, Banco di Napoli Fondazione The most important activities are: To enhance the research sector:   It establishes and manages a research structure where public and private laboratories coexist   It carries out research projects in polymeric materials and composites engineering sector. To attract and train talented people:   It launches an international graduate school on “Polymeric and composite materials Engineering and Structures” (through the University of Naples Federico II)   It launches initiatives of upgrading aimed at improving talented people skills in the district  (in collaboration with academic and public research institutes and industries) To promote the technological district:   It supports patents recording   It gives advices in the economic analysis to promote the constitution of a spin-off research   It performs “networking tasks”   It launches “Business Plan Competition” initiatives

Target And Perspective in the Mid-Long Term

		Perspectives   To become an international attraction pole  in the advanced materials sector   To promote economic growth through the economic potential of the research Expected results   To create technological start-ups (30 in 7-10 years)   To attract new companies in the sector (56 leading companies and about 50 medium-sized enterprises in 5 years)   To increase the number of recorded patents (100 new  patents in 5 years)   To speed up the revenue growth of the existing companies which operate already (of 23 % per year)

Requests and Envisage of Possible Investiments

		The new polymeric and composite materials represent a broadside technology and they are quickly evolving. Opportunities for new businesses to be established are likely to come in the applications related to the new industrial sectors such as the biomedical, micro and nanoelectronics ones etc. The District is also aimed at facilitating and supporting such new initiatives. In this perspective, it could be interesting for IMAST  to take into account the possible partnership of new investors from other  countries for the new initiatives to be launched.
